Our Vision of Creating an Inclusive, Equal, and Sustainable Future
The Georgian Farmers Association (GFA) has been committed to aligning its initiatives with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since 2014.
GFA, as one of the members of the UN Global Compact is embodying its plethora of principles in everyday work and integrating them into organizational culture. The goal is to support Georgia’s socio-economic advancement, multisectoral cooperation, research, and innovation through different initiatives. Also, advocating environmental policy, promoting access to education, empowering vulnerable groups, and ensuring that it provides a quality work environment for employees. GFA supports the empowerment of farmers – micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises through providing quality services.
Goals
01 – No Poverty
Description: Eradication of extreme poverty for all people living in Georgia.
Within the framework of various initiatives, the Georgian Farmers’ Association (GFA) is committed to promoting the socio-economic development of the country to strengthen and help various vulnerable groups (women, youth, people with disabilities, prisoners, etc.) through the implementation of awareness-raising, educational, and financial assistance programs.
02 – No Hunger
Description: Eradicating hunger, improving food safety, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
The Georgia Farmers’ Association (GFA) has developed a local standard GeoG.A.P for primary producers of fruit, vegetable production, and dairy farms which outlines sustainable agricultural practices. It provides for harmonization with European standards in terms of food safety. The certification scheme ensures the production of safe and quality products and creates a value chain between farmers, consumers, and suppliers.
04 – Quality Education
Description: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The Georgian Farmers Association (GFA) has been actively trying to increase access to education in various directions over the past years within the framework of different initiatives. Specifically, the current project is implemented within the framework of the Agro Duo sectoral skills development initiatives.
05 – Gender Equality
Description: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
The Georgian Farmers’ Association (GFA) has been at the forefront of promoting the economic empowerment of women, helping them access the market, and providing them with technical and financial resources and support. For instance, GFA has targeted women entrepreneurs, specifically agri-business owners, and provided incentives to help them develop their ventures.
08 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
Description: Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.
On the one hand, the Georgian Farmers Association (GFA) has been trying to contribute to the economic development of Georgia through the development of agricultural sectors. On the other hand, to promote the sector by establishing and promoting micro, small, and medium enterprises.
Among them, the association has been actively working to increase access to financial services and resources of project beneficiaries. Accordingly, all the implemented initiatives are directly or indirectly related to the fulfillment of the goal. Additionally, GFA provides professional and capacity-building opportunities to its employees and allows the association’s employees to grow and develop.
09 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Description: Build resilient infrastructure, remote, inclusive, and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
The Georgian Farmers Association (GFA) in the footsteps of world technological development is trying to develop both a strong research base and digital platforms about technologies in the field of agriculture and to introduce innovation.
A good example of this is the mobile application “Agronavti” which was created in 2017 to promote the sale of products produced by farmers. The application is a simple and flexible electronic system, which allows the farmer to enter and connect with new markets in terms of the sale of produced products.
10 – Reduced Inequalities
Description: Reduce inequality within and among countries.
The Georgian Farmers Association (GFA) is focused on strengthening the representatives of different segments of society, providing them with opportunities for development and reducing inequalities. Also, voicing the concerns of farmers and providing advocacy for developing more citizen-oriented policies.
11- Sustainable Cities and Communities
Description: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
The Georgia Farmers’ Association (GFA) supports sustainable consumption and production approaches, raising awareness and disseminating information through the support of “Green Policy”. Promoting opportunities and development for local farmers by developing the agricultural sector.
12 – Sustainable Consumption and Production
Description: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
Within the framework of various educational projects, the Georgian Farmers’ Association (GFA) is trying to raise awareness among its beneficiaries about sustainable production and consumption. Promoting harmonious coexistence with nature and environmental issues involves the rational use of exhaustible and inexhaustible resources. Also, raising farmers’ awareness of good farm management and safety practices.
In September 2023 DSD Lense-supported initiative a social media campaign” Act4SDGs” was held that highlighted farmers’ stories about responsible and sustainable farming. The overall goal of the campaign was to raise awareness of the importance of responsible production and consumption of solid waste management in agriculture. Additionally, there was a blog published on “Chacha – useless residue or useful soil amendment?”
13 – Climate Action
Description: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
The Georgian Farmers’ Association (GFA) is constantly trying to implement measures that will contribute to the reduction of climate change. The association’s vision is to equip farmers with knowledge and appropriate equipment that is aimed at reducing emissions and causing less damage to the environment. To achieve this goal, the association has implemented initiatives both at the local and regional levels.
16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
Description: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.
Georgian Farmers’ Association (GFA) is actively engaged with local, and international organizations as well as government agencies. The goal is to deepen inter-sectoral cooperation and develop an inclusive policy. It should be noted that the Association actively cooperates with government institutions to promote good agricultural practices. Farmers Council is a body that serves as a platform that discusses the challenges in various fields of agriculture and brings the farmers’ concerns to the decision-makers and advocates for policy changes.
17 – Partnerships for the Goal
Description: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
The Georgian Farmers’ Association (GFA) is the UN Global Compact member which aims to bring the principles of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into daily activities and organizational culture. Also, to strengthen technologies and innovations in the direction of agriculture. The Association actively cooperates with international sectoral organizations and donors.
